TCD’s Department of Economics’ Terence Gorman Postgraduate Prize

Trinity College’s Department of Economics presented its first Terence Gorman Postgraduate Prize at a recent prize-giving ceremony to two students who achieved first in the class in the Master of Science (Economics).

The prize was founded by a bequest from Mrs Dorinda Gorman in memory of her husband, the distinguished economist, Terence Gorman, formerly of the London School of Economics and the University of Oxford. Mr Gorman was a Trinity College economics graduate of 1948 and was made an Honorary Fellow in 1990.

The Terence Gorman Postgraduate Prize will be awarded annually to the best students in the M.Sc (Econ). The prize is to encourage the use of quantitative methods in economics and is based on performance in coursework and a thesis, adjudicated by Professor John Sutton, an external examiner on the M.Sc (Econ) and Professor John Hicks, both of the London School of Economics and Political Science.

The recipient of the prize for 2005 was Tara Lynn Mitchell who is currently doing a PhD in the London School of Economics and Political Science. For 2006, the joint winners were Qi Li and Denis Tkachenko, who also are currently doing PhDs in Trinity.

Undergraduate student, Deirdre Reilly was also presented with a prize for a first in Junior Sophister Econometrics in 2006.
