About Challenging Stasis: Managing Chronic Disease with Exercise

The core focus of Professor Hussey’s research is the use of exercise in the management of chronic disease. She developed a strong interest in the area from early in her career when she was working clinically in the Mater Hospital in Dublin and Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital in London. The lecture will outline the development of her programme of research in cancer rehabilitation along with how she helped to build research capacity by supporting and supervising other staff in doing research degrees. There has been considerable change in the role of physiotherapy in exercise prescription over the last 30 years. In the future, there will be the need to consider physical functioning issues that may arise from newer therapies and how they need to be addressed through exercise interventions.

About Professor Hussey

Professor Hussey came to Trinity College Dublin in 1992 as an Assistant Professor in Physiotherapy, was promoted to Associate Professor in 2006, Professor in Physiotherapy in 2015 and was successful in obtaining a personal chair in 2022. She was head of the discipline of Physiotherapy from 2003-2014.

Professor Hussey was elected to fellowship in 2011 and appointed as Vice President for Global Relations for two terms (2014-2021).

Professor Hussey leads a group working in the area of exercise rehabilitation in patients with cancer. Most of this research is in conjunction with colleagues in St James’s Hospital and in particular the Department of Surgery under Professor John Reynolds. Her research is translational and is aimed at scientifically improving exercise prescription to optimise therapeutic responses.

About Inaugural Lectures

It is the tradition in that newly appointed Professors in Trinity are invited to give an Inaugural Lecture. The lecture represents the official recognition of their appointment to Professor and the lecture itself provides an opportunity to showcase their achievements in research, innovation, engagement and teaching activities before an audience of members of the University community, invited stakeholders and the general public. An inaugural lecture is a significant event in an academic staff member’s career.
