University of Dublin inaugurates new Pro-Chancellor

Leading academic Prof. Dermot McAleese was admitted as a Pro-Chancellor of the University of Dublin (Trinity College) at a special ceremony today (Thurs 27 October).

In becoming a Pro-Chancellor, Prof. McAleese will be a member of the University Senate and may deputise for the Chancellor, Dr. Mary Robinson.

Currently Chairman of the Institute for International Integration Studies, TCD, Prof. McAleese is also an Associate Faculty member of the Irish Management Institute and of the Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chaussees, Paris.

He held the Whately Chair of Political Economy at TCD from 1979 to 2004 and was Dean of the Faculty of Business, Economic and Social Studies 1999 – 2004. He has served on the College’s Investment Committee for many years. Since retiring in September 2004, he has continued to teach on several postgraduate courses in Trinity.

Prof. McAleese is a former Director of the Central Bank of Ireland (1979 – 1996). He was Chairman of the Commission on Public Service Pensions (1996 – 2001) and continues to serve on many advisory committees and boards. He has worked as a consultant for the European Commission, the OECD and the World Bank.

At the inauguration the Provost, Dr. John Hegarty stated: “The University is delighted that Dermot McAleese is its new Pro-Chancellor. With his distinguished academic career and knowledge of the university sector, he will bring much experience to this post”.
