Trinity Takes To The Streets – 190 TCD Runners Take the Challenge

Posted on: 18 May 2009

Trinity Takes To The Streets is an initiative to get students, alumni, staff and friends of Trinity College Dublin to run the Dublin City Marathon on 26th October 2009 in support of Trinity programmes tackling educational disadvantage including the Trinity Access Programmes (TAP), the National Institute for Intellectual Disability (NIID) and the Student Hardship Fund.

To date, 190 runners have committed to taking this challenge and many others have come on board as helpers and supporters. “We are delighted that so many staff, students, alumni and friends have joined up. The programmes we are supporting target some of the most vulnerable groups in our society and many people are keen to do what they can to ensure they are sustained through difficult economic times. All runners will be raising sponsorship for their chosen initiative and Trinity Foundation will be working to build on their efforts by securing matching funding from business, alumni and others,” commented Nick Sparrow, Director of Trinity Foundation.

“With six months to go to the marathon, there is still plenty of time to get training and participate in Trinity Takes To The Streets. So, if you or a friend are fairly fit, do sign-up by emailing Belinda in Trinity Foundation,” Nick added.

The next event – ‘The Ouch Factor’- is taking place on Thursday 21st May at 5.30pm at which two seasoned runners, Adriele Prina Mello, a researcher in CRANN and Simone Grassi, a PhD student in Computer Science will be on hand to answer questions about training schedules and a physiotherapist will talk about common pains and complaints experienced at this stage of marathon training. All welcome!

Running the mini-marathon on 1st June? Why not wear the Trinity Takes To The Streets (TTTTS) T-shirt and raise sponsorship for educational access. For a TTTTS sponsorship card email, belinda.clements@tcd.ie or setup your own fundraising page on www.mycharity.ie. Special running groups, training sessions, regular e-zines and talks are being organized to support all volunteers.
