Trinity Students Take Home 10 Awards at National Student Media Awards

Trinity was the outright winner of the night, scooping 10 awards at National Student Media Awards – Smedias, which this year received over 1,000 entries from student journalists, broadcasters and producers from all across Ireland. 

Trinity News won The Irish Times’ Newspaper of the Year, Layout and Design, Web Designer and Website of the Year with Editor, Catherine Healy collecting the awards on the night for the student newspaper.

Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering student Andrew Murphy, from Blackrock, won the Web Designer Award for his work on the College’s Trinity News Website.

Masters in Philosophy student, Meadhbh McGrath, from Celbridge, Co. Kildare won the Editor of the Year Award. Judged and presented by Editor of the Irish Independent, Conor Goodman, the award honoured Meadhbh for her role as Editor of Trinity College Dublin’s Tn2 Magazine.

Geology PHD student, Anthea Lacchia from Italy, won the Science Education Writer of the Year award, sponsored by the Science Foundation Ireland. Anthea was also recently selected as one of the five international winners of the Naturejobs Career Expo Journalism Competition for budding science journalists.

Second year Law and Business student, Benn Hogan, from Portlaoise won the award for Journalist of The Year/ Iriseoireacht Scríofa which was presented on the night by lead news anchor from TG4, Eimear Ní Chonaola.

Ancient History & Archaeology student, Grace Nuttall, from London, took home the award for Best Small College/Society Publication of the Year for her work with the DU Photography Association Photobook. The DUPA Photobook is a compilation of work from the photographers who were chosen to be exhibited at the prestigious End of Year Exhibition. Out of over 30 people who applied, only 11 were selected to be exhibited. Each photographer displayed four photos relating to their own theme, and chose an extra photo to be included in the companion photobook.

English Literature and History student, Rachel Lavin, from Boyle, Co. Roscommon won two of the big journalism awards on the night. Rachel took home the Journalist of the Year National Press Award for her work in the Sunday Independent, and the Features Writer – News and Current Affairs Award judged by The Herald. Rachel won an all-Ireland scholarship to attend Trinity College Dublin in 2010 and during her studies at Trinity she has served as a resident blogger, Online Magazine Editor, Features Editor and Magazine Editor.

The 15th National Student Media Awards organised by student website, Oxygen.ie and sponsored by KBC Bank Ireland.
