Posted on: 14 March 2014
Students at Trinity marked the Indian festival of colours, Holi, this week with a celebration on the College’s Front Square. Organised by Trinity’s Indian Society, the Trinity celebrations for the Holi festival aim to embrace and promote multiculturalism within the College and Ireland. Over 100 members of the student body joined in the celebration that saw students throw coloured powder at each other while dancing to Indian music.
Indian Ambassador to Ireland, Mrs Radhika Lokesh was at Trinity to launch the event and to present a donation from the Indian Society, generated from the proceeds of the event, to its chosen charity, Trinity’s Suas Programme.
“Since this festival is so popular, we wanted to help out with a cause or charity each year,” stated Chairperson of the Trinity Indian Society, Servesh Muralidharan. “This year we donated €800 from the funds raised through this event to Trinity’s ‘Suas’ programme and through them help one of the schools in West Bengal – DAS (Development Action Society) for their valued teacher training programme. The Society hopes to introduce a number of such festivals that not only attracts the Indian student community in Trinity but also other students who are interested to know more about Indian culture. “
Holi, often referred to as the ‘festival of colours’, is an Indian festival that bids farewell to winter and marks the emergence of spring and is one of the most widely celebrated Indian festivals worldwide. Stemming from Indian folklore, the festival celebrates the triumph of good over evil and bridges the gap between social classes.
