Trinity Student Societies Win National Irish College Awards

The Philosophical Society won the ‘Best Event in a Large College Award’ for its event, The Trials of Oscar Wilde and Mark Atkinson from Trinity Players was awarded ‘Best Fresher in a Large College’ at the recent National Board of Irish College Society Awards.

TCD was strongly represented in a range of other award categories including ‘Best Society’ – The Comedy Society, ‘Most Improved Society’ – DU Management Science Society,  ‘Best Individual’ – Jennifer Geraghty and ‘Best Website’ – The Cumann Gaelach (www.cumann.ie).

The Irish College Society Awardsare run by the Board of Irish College Societies (BICS)  which is a national organisation dedicated to providing a national forum for societies in Ireland’s universities, colleges and education institutions. BICS is responsible for the promotion of interest in the activities of Irish college societies and for fostering contact and co-operation between them.

Trinity College‘s own CSC (Central Societies Committee) Society of the Year Awards were also recently presented, with the Orchestra Society winning the Best Overall Society award. This award is voted for on the night by student attending the ceremony. 

Other CSC award winners included ‘Best Poster’ – DU Food and Drink Society; ‘Best Website’ -Joint Winners, The Cumann Gaelach (www.cumann.ie) and Trinity FM (www.trinityfm.com);’Best Fresher” – Mark Atkinson; ‘Best Individual’ -Jennifer Geraghty; ‘Best Small Society’ – the Orchestra Society; ‘Best Medium Society’ – the Entrepreneurial Society; ‘Best Large Society’ – The Comedy Society; and ‘Best Event’ ? Joint winners ?The Philosophical Society for The Trials of Oscar Wilde. & the Trinity Arts Festival.

The CSC awards honour students who have put great effort into fulfilling the aims of their societies and providing a service to their members while adding significantly to the Trinity experience. This year’s awards were sponsored by AIB and the Trinity Foundation. The CSC is the College body that regulates student societies, granting recognition and funding as well as overseeing activity. Formally established in 1969, the CSC is now responsible for ninety eight societies covering diverse interests.
