Trinity St James’s Cancer Institute awarded OECI accreditation

The Trinity St James’s Cancer Institute, jointly operated by Trinity College and St James’s Hospital, has become the first in Ireland to be awarded OECI Cancer Centre accreditation and designation. The award was officially presented to the institute today, November 12th 2020.
Europe’s leading cancer accreditation agency, the Organisation of European Cancer Institutes (OECI), sets the gold standard for cancer institutes in Europe. Until now, Ireland and Greece were the only countries in Western Europe without an OECI accredited cancer centre.
The Trinity St James’s Cancer Institute will harness its world class academic and clinical expertise to enhance the development of new treatments, diagnostics and prevention strategies in a dedicated Cancer Institute.
The long-term ambition of the Trinity St James’s Cancer Institute is to become a fully Comprehensive Cancer Centre with outstanding services in cancer molecular diagnostics, genomics and translational immune-oncology.
Evidence shows that the best outcomes for patients are achieved in centres like this, where high volume and highly specialised evidence-based cancer care is combined with scientific and technological advances. More effective treatments, supported by world class research, innovation and cancer clinical trials, will impact positively on patient experiences and outcomes.
A joint fundraising programme has commenced which will support the resources and capital infrastructure required to provide a dedicated facility.
This dedicated state of the art facility will be designed to integrate ambulatory and inpatient departments, improve multidisciplinary service delivery, and expand the range of services available to patients, including enhanced personalised medicine.

The hospital campus is already home to several national centres and institutions, tertiary acute services, developed research and education facilities, and has the largest medical oncology programme in the country. This best places the Trinity St James’s Cancer Institute to deliver the country’s first Comprehensive Cancer Centre, directly improving the experiences and outcomes for cancer patients in Ireland and beyond.
