Trinity Professor Elected 2016 IEEE Fellow

Professor John Heywood, Fellow Emeritus, School of Education, Trinity College Dublin has been elected a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), the world’s largest and most prestigious professional association for the advancement of technology for humanity.
Professor Heywood received the honour in recognition of “contributions to engineering education research and the development of engineering education as a field of scientific inquiry”.
IEEE Fellowship is conferred on individuals with an outstanding record of accomplishment in an IEEE field of interest. It is a rare honour with only one-tenth of one percent of the organisation's total voting membership receiving the accolade annually.
Professor Heywood’s “Engineering Education: Research and Development in Curriculum and Instruction” received the 2006 annual award for the outstanding research publication from the Division for the Professions of the American Educational Research Association. It was published by IEEE/Wiley who are to publish shortly his “Assessment of learning in Engineering Education: Practice and Policy”.
Through its 400,000 members in 160 countries, the IEEE is a leading authority on a wide variety of areas ranging from aerospace systems, computers and telecommunications to biomedical engineering, electric power and consumer electronics.
Dedicated to the advancement of technology, the IEEE publishes 30 percent of the world’s literature in the electrical and electronics engineering and computer science fields, and has developed more than 900 active industry standards. The association also sponsors or co-sponsors nearly 400 international technical conferences each year.
