Trinity Participates in Innovation Dublin Festival 2011

The Innovation Dublin 2011 festival celebrates and showcases the innovations and creativity that happen in Dublin. Now in its third year, Innovation Dublin aims to drive Dublin forward as an exemplary creative and sustainable city.
Trinity College Dublin is participating in Innovation Dublin 2011 through organising a seminar on how its graduates will create the businesses of the future, a dedicated programme being broadcast on An Lár TV, and students being involved in a crowdfunding website.
Trinity’s participation in the following initiatives aims to ‘inspire, interact & innovate’, according to Audrey Crosbie, Industry Liaison Manager, TCD.
Crowd-funding student entrepreneurs: Fund it is an Ireland-wide initiative that provides a platform for people with great ideas to attract funding from friends, fans and followers across the world. Two 4th year computer engineering students, Simon Maishman and Maurice Gavin, are looking to raise €1,000 to seed the development of a smart phone application targeting ‘senior users’ called ClearCall. Members of the public can follow the progress of a number of student entrepreneurs as donations reap rewards, an interesting business model for start-ups. Congratulations to Natasha Calder and Kathleen Gallagher from the School of English who have already reached their target of raising €1,200 for the (Renegade) Rant & Rave Magazine.
Trinity showcase on Internet TV: An Lár TV is a new Irish Internet TV channel, broadcasting 24/7. This hour-long compilation of Trinity videos will be shown every day for three weeks throughout the Innovation Dublin festival. The Trinity Showcase illustrates how the College is shaping the future of Ireland through our teaching and research programmes. The videos include a trio of commercialisation projects (WingWatch, Solvotrin & SureWash), a fly through recent Science Gallery exhibitions, the Alumni Appeal, and a series of videos from CRANN, leaders in nanotechnology research.
Seminar: “How our Graduates will Create the Businesses of the Future” on 2/11/11 at 4.00pm in the Schrodinger Lecture Theatre, Fitzgerald Building, School of Physics, TCD.
Academic research leaders, seasoned graduate entrepreneurs and students in start-up mode will give brief accounts of where they see the opportunities and what initiatives could restore economic growth. Speakers include: Prof Frances Ruane, Director of the Economic & Social Research Institute on where national policy fits into the picture; Academic Research Speakers: Prof Poul Holm, Director, Trinity Long Room Hub, Prof Linda Doyle, Director, CTVR, Prof Shane O’Mara, Director of TCIN, Dr Matthew Campbell, Ocular Genetics Unit, Prof Paul Coughlan, TCD Course Co-Director, Innovation Academy; Entrepreneurs: Gerard Lacey, Co-Founder of 3 spin-out companies from TCD, Steven Collins, Co-Founder of 3 spin-out companies from TCD including Havok, and Dr Brian Kelly, Co-Founder of Celtic Catalyst, a UCD spin-out.
