Trinity launches first Research Strategy and Charter

Posted on: 06 June 2019

Trinity’s Living Research Excellence Strategy and Research Charter were launched today by the Provost, Dr Patrick Prendergast.

Spearheaded by the Dean of Research, Professor Linda Doyle, the publications are the result of an intensive year-long consultation process that engaged people from different disciplines and divisions across the College community and are a reflection of their goals and aspirations.

“Research is at the heart of what we do in Trinity. It is part of our core mission along with teaching,” explained the Dean of Research.

“Our vision is to engage in research with the quality, intensity, depth, diversity, and openness that leads to fundamental breakthroughs, new understandings, key insights, and that can make translational and transformative advances”, the Dean continued.

Speaking at the launch, the Provost, Dr Patrick Prendergast said “Research excellence drives our mission in education, innovation and public engagement. When Trinity makes headlines with a new spin-out – as we did this week with the sustainable X-ray marker, Combimark2 – or when our students win awards, or our academics engage with public policy and social issues in conferences or the media – all this comes out of our foundation of research excellence”.

“By creating the first ever formal Research Strategy and Charter in the history of the university, we are reaffirming that research and scholarship are at the heart of everything we do”, the Provost added.

Underpinning the Research Charter are seven principles:

  1. Cherish academic freedom, diversity of scholarship, and pursuit of truth
  2. Position research at the heart of Trinity
  3. Foster and grow research talent and leadership
  4. Harness our collective expertise for the greater good
  5. Broaden our local and global impact
  6. Engage profoundly with our publics
  7. Stand up for research

The Living Research Excellence Strategy provides a framework to guide the university’s actions in delivering these principles and goals across six action areas.

Illustrating the diversity and breath of research underway in Trinity – from undergraduate level to established world leaders – speakers at the launch included Philip Smyth, an undergraduate researcher and Laidlaw Scholar; Laura Finnegan, a PhD candidate and 2019 winner of the Mary Mulvihill Award, the science media competition; Dr Anna Barcz, a Research Fellow in the Trinity Long Room Hub; and Professor Lorraine O’Driscoll, School of Pharmacy.
