Trinity Launches Bachelor in Science in Nursing Degree

The School of Nursing and Midwifery Studies at Trinity College Dublin has launched a new Bachelor in Science in Nursing Degree.

Two hundred and fifty students are due to commence the course in October of this year. The programme will prepare students for professional nursing practice in the twenty-first century and equip them with knowledge and skills in a variety of clinical and community settings.

In order to accommodate the new students and staff, the School of Nursing and Midwifery Studies will be developing over three sites.
A building in D’Olier Street/Hawkins Street has been acquired and will be refurbished to provide offices and teaching facilities.

At present work is ongoing at the Trinity Centre for Health Sciences,
St. James’s Hospital site to provide state-of-the-art practical simulation laboratories. These facilities should become available to students and staff in March of 2003 and will provide students with the opportunity to develop their skills before working with the public.

A further office and teaching facility will be open at the Trinity Centre for Health Sciences at the Adelaide and Meath Hospital, Dublin incorporating the National Children’s Hospital at Tallaght, Dublin in the following year.

In undertaking the new degree, students will have their main theoretical input on campus, while clinical learning experience will, depending on discipline, be based in Trinity’s seven linked health service providers:

– The Adelaide and Meath Hospital, Dublin, incorporating the National Children’s Hospital at Tallaght, Dublin
– St. James’s Hospital, Dublin
– South Western Area Health Board (SWAB) and East Coast Area –
Health Board (ECAHB)
– St. Brendan’s Hospital, Dublin
– St. Patrick’s Hospital, Dublin
– Stewart’s Hospital Services Ltd., Dublin
– St. Anne’s, Moore Abbey, Monasterevin, Co. Kildare
