Trinity Immunologist Honoured for Huge Contribution to Field of Innate Immunity

Professor of Biochemistry and Academic Director of the Trinity Biomedical Sciences Institute (School of Biochemistry and Immunology) at Trinity College Dublin, Luke O'Neill, has been awarded the prestigious European Federation of Immunology Societies medal for being an ‘outstanding European Immunologist’.

Professor O’Neill was nominated for the award by the German Society for Immunology, and was presented with the accolade at the annual meeting of the Society in Bonn, Germany.

The award involved an invitation to give the keynote address and a bronze medal, which depicts two of Europe’s most eminent immunologists, Ilyi Mechnikov and Paul Ehrlich.

Professor O’Neill was honoured for his work in the area of innate immunity. The citation stated that he has made a critical contribution to the field over the past 15 years, and that he has helped to redefine the area for immunology research.

Furthermore, his capacity to inspire other scientists and students in the field of immunology was noted.

He said: “I am delighted to accept this award on behalf of all the students and postdocs who have worked with me over the years.”
