Trinity geographer elected to International Science Council

Posted on: 14 August 2018

Chair of Geography, Environment and Society at Trinity, Professor Anna Davies, has been elected as a member of the International Science Council (ISC) – a unique global non-governmental scientific organisation representing both the natural and social sciences.

In a historic meeting in Paris in July the ISC was formed when the International Council for Science (ICSU) and the International Social Science Council (ISSC) merged. The ISC is the largest global science organisation of its type, bringing together 40 international scientific Unions and Associations and over 140 national and regional scientific organisations including Academies and Research Councils.

The main goal of the Council is to advance science as a global public good, ensuring scientific knowledge, data and expertise is universally accessible and its benefits universally shared.

Professor Davies, elected as an ordinary member of the first Governing Board of the ISC, will now work to that goal with the other members for the duration of her term of office, which runs from now until 2021.

Professor Davies was one of only 10 people elected from 54 outstanding nominees. She said: “It is a great honour to be elected to the Governing Board of the International Science Council with its vision of science, including social science, as a global public good.”

“With its mandate from across national scientific bodies, International Scientific Unions and Associations, I am looking forward to working with the ISC to help catalyse, incubate and coordinate international action on issues of major public concern in line with its values of excellence and professionalism, inclusivity and diversity, transparency and integrity, innovation and sustainability.”
