Trinity Excels in Chemistry and Physics World Rankings

The 2011 QS World University Rankings has seen the Schools of Chemistry and Physics at Trinity College excel on the league tables with rankings of 36th and 49th in the world respectively.  Trinity College is the only Irish university named in the top 50 for this new set of rankings which was compiled from a list of over 600 of the world’s top third level institutions. 

Commenting on the significance of the achievement, Head of Organic, Medicinal and Biological Chemistry Professor Mathias Senge said: “The high ranking achieved by the School of Chemistry is an indication of the high academic qualities of the students and teaching programmes, the calibre of the School’s faculty, and the attractiveness of our graduates to the global workplace.  As a top scoring subject area in Trinity College, ranking 36th internationally and 6th in Europe, the School competes internationally at the highest level.  The ranking is also a reflection of a modern syllabus, stringent recruitment policies and the dedication of our academic, administrative and technical staff.” 

Head of the School of Physics, Professor John Donegan said: “The School of Physics is very pleased to have achieved 49th place in the QS world rankings.  This is a tribute to the quality of our undergraduate and graduate students and their very positive impact in employment once they have left TCD.  This placing is an acknowledgement also of the high quality of the research being carried out by our staff with vital input from our post-doctoral researchers, graduate student and technical staff. Our close working relationship with CRANN is also evident in this high placing.”
