Trinity Composers Perform Concert of New Works

Posted on: 09 April 2009

Music students from the School of Drama, Film & Music, at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, collaborated to organise a concert of new works in the Samuel Beckett Theatre on April 7th last.  The event, titled New Music for New Pianos, was supported by the Provost’s fund for the Visual and Performing Arts and featured new compositions from the Node Ensemble, TCD’s contemporary music group, interspersed with selections from John Cage’s Sonatas and Interludes for ‘Prepared Piano’.  The ‘Prepared Piano’, a grand piano with altered timbrel qualities achieved through the insertion of objects such as nails, bolts and rubber strips between the strings, was the focal point of the concert.

The group derived its name from the Node Concert Series and they are dedicated to encouraging new composers in order to continuously enhance TCD’s vibrant composition scene.  This year, students from the Music and Media Technologies course also contributed to the concert which featured soloist Deborah Henry and conductor David Coonan, a 4th year music student.

The School of Drama, Film & Music is internationally renowned for its research activities and achievements.  A full range of academic degrees from BA to PhD are available, and all undergraduate music students may specialise in one of three main areas: composition, musicology and music technology.  For more information about the School please see www.tcd.ie/drama-film-music.
