The Dublin University Sailing Club (DUSC) recently won the Student Yachting World Cup in Lorient in Brittany. This is the first time that an Irish university has won this prestigious award. The TCD sailing club was the only Irish team in the intervarsity team racing circuit, competing against thirteen teams of eleven different nationalities. Despite stiff competition from the race’s main contenders, Scotland, England (Southampton), USA and Portugal, the Irish team was victorious.
The team sailed in a Mumm 30s yacht in a variety of conditions during the race, from light winds at the beginning of the week to a strong breeze of 30 knots in the final race.
DUSC’s nine-member team was made up of TCD students: Geoff Tait ( Senior Freshman ( Dental Science), Lisa Tait ( Senior Freshman, Law and French) Russell Treacy ( Senior Sophister, Civil Engineering), Claudine Murphy ( Senior Freshman, Mathematics), John Downey (Senior Sophister, Business Studies) Katie Hamilton ( Senior Freshman, Physiotherapy), as well as TCD recent graduates Sam Hunt ( History and Political Science), Ronan Dillon Murphy (Civil Engineering) and the team’s skipper, Stefan Hyde (Civil Engineering).
