The Lir Building Shortlisted for Architecture Award

Posted on: 18 June 2012

The Lir National Academy of Dramatic Art at Trinity College Dublin has been shortlisted for the Royal Institute of Architects of Ireland (RIAI) Public Choice Award 2012. The competition asks for the public to vote for their favourite building from a diverse shortlist of projects.

The Lir Academy building is located on Pearse Street and was designed by Smith and Kennedy Architects. Notable features of the building include the varied brickwork throughout and the striking green bubbles cascading down its front.

The Lir was developed by the partnership of the Cathal Ryan Trust and Trinity College Dublin. It opened its doors to the first students in September 2011, with its aim to train young actors, designers, directors, playwrights, stage managers and theatre technicians to the highest international standards for careers in the theatre and allied professions. The Lir was conceived as a cultural hub of its own with a diverse range of students on a variety of courses linked to the distinct professional disciplines. At night, it opens its doors to the public and will offer a developing programme of performances, films, play readings, talks and lectures. When plans are complete the Lir’s café/bar will open to the public and it will become a place for theatre professionals, students of The Lir, and the general public to meet, interact and socialise.

The awards are run by the RIAI and are divided into 16 categories including emerging practice, public building, health and leisure.  The public can vote online at www.architectureawards.ie or on http://www.architectureawards.ie/the-lir-academy
