TCD student wins 2008 Engineers Ireland Biomedical Research Medal

Trinity postgraduate student David Hoey was recently awarded The 2008 Engineers Ireland Biomedical Research Medal. This award is made annually by Engineers Ireland to a final year PhD student who has been judged by a select committee to be making a significant contribution to the field of biomedical engineering research.
Four finalists were selected on the basis of a research paper which was submitted to the Division of Biomedical Engineering of Engineer’s Ireland in and David was selected as the winner following oral presentations of the work at an event in the Royal College of Surgeons on Tuesday May 19th.
David’s presentation was based on his research paper titled, “The role of stress concentrations in the fatigue strength of a porous bone cement mantle”. At the ceremony David was presented with a silver gilt medal from the Biomedical Division of Engineers Ireland and a cheque for €1000 sponsored by GeorgiaTech Ireland.
This is the second year the Engineers Ireland Biomedical Research Medal has been awarded to a Trinity College student. Niamh Nowlan won the medal in 2007 for her research on “Mechanics in embryonic bone development”.
