Posted on: 12 February 2009

The International Office celebrated the Chinese New Year of the Ox last week with an event at which Chinese students currently studying at Trinity College Dublin attended. A representative from the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Ireland’s Education and Culture section, Dong Huiqing, spoke at the event which was presided over by the Vice-Provost/ Chief Academic Officer, Professor Patrick Prendergast.

There are currently 93 students studying at Trinity College at both postgraduate and undergraduate levels. The College has been actively engaged in developing exciting academic links with the country and it has recently forged partnerships with Tongji University and  Fudan University in Shanghai.  The College also has an office based in Shanghai and a former Trinity graduate and staff member, Kate Xiang, has been representing the university there.  Trinity College also has several Irish and Chinese alumni in China who met last October with the Vice-Provost/ Chief Academic Officer  and the Director of the International Office at an event hosted by Trinity in Shanghai.

Historically,  Trinity also has very strong links with China going back some 100 years.  The Trinity College Far East Mission was originally involved in setting up the  Fuzhou Foreign Languages School in Fuzhou in the Fujian Provence which celebrated its 100th year anniversary in 2007   and  was attended by  Trinity representatives.
