Students debate with Canada’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change

Students from Trinity debated the paths that must be taken if we are to mitigate the effects of climate change with Minister of Environment and Climate Change for Canada, Catherine McKenna, MP.

The students, comprising MSc candidates in Environmental Sciences, Biodiversity and Conservation, and Development Practice were joined by their undergraduate peers from related disciplines to engage in a debate and Q&A session focusing on Canada’s leadership on climate change, how to encourage youth involvement in supporting climate change objectives, the role of women in this sector, and the role of innovation in transitioning to lower-carbon economies.

Assistant Professor in Isotopes and the Environment at Trinity, Quentin Crowley, hosted Catherine McKenna, MP, at the event along with Trinity Provost, Dr Patrick Prendergast.

They were also joined by former President of Ireland and Chancellor of Trinity, Dr Mary Robinson, who is President of the Mary Robinson Foundation — Climate Justice.

Professor Crowley said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for the climate entrepreneurs of tomorrow to develop a wider understanding of the environmental challenges facing us all. Through increased engagement with policy makers, we can better understand how our individual actions can contribution to global climate mitigation and adaptation.”
