Stalwarts of patient safety – Trinity welcomes international nursing researchers

Trinity’s School of Nursing and Midwifery this week plays host to the 2017 Winter Summit of the European Academy of Nursing Science (EANS).

The two-day meeting has the theme Nurses: Stalwarts of Patient Safety. More than 40 nursing researchers from all around Europe will come together to discuss the critical role of nurses in patient safety.

Apart from the more obvious task of nurses as keepers and promoters of patient safety, the safety of nurses themselves has also been a focus of attention for some time. This is of course closely related to patient safety, which can only be ensured when nurses are not impaired by physical or psychological problems.

In various presentations and workshops, internationally renowned speakers will address these topics from different perspectives and discuss possible ways to improve nursing care and patient safety.

Professor of Children's Nursing and Research in Trinity's School of Nursing and Midwifery, Imelda Coyne, said: "Nurses play an essential role in promoting patient safety and while safety isn't expensive, it is absolutely priceless in healthcare. Summits such as this one are vital for moving research and practice forward, and we are looking forward to some fantastic discussion."
