Sports round-up for January

Posted on: 01 February 2018

Trinity’s sporting year got off to a winning start when Trinity Rugby (DUFC) achieved their first home win of the season with a 25-10 victory over St Mary’s. The match, which took place on College Park at the start of the month, will hopefully be a turning point for DUFC who’ve struggled with some poor results so far this season.

In men’s Gaelic football, Trinity’s Sigerson Cup dream died prematurely again this year when the team was beaten in the preliminary rounds by DkIT. The silver lining is that Trinity GAA club can still look forward to hosting the Sigerson final at Santry Sports Grounds on Saturday February 17th.

There were two big competitions for the Fencing Club this month – the Trinity Cup and the Professor Duffy Memorial Team Épée, both of which took place in the Sports Centre. DUFC1 won the Trinity Cup, thanks in part to a strong closing performance by women’s captain Manon Nouvian.

In the Professor Duffy event – named in honour of Professor Patrick Duffy (1921-1987), who previously coached the club – DUFC1 men took bronze.

Trinity’s senior hurlers began their Fitzgibbon Cup campaign (main photo and below) with a hastily rearranged home fixture that had to be moved from Santry to Abbotstown due to weather. NUIG were comfortable winners however Trinity’s second game, against current holders Mary Immaculate, was a much closer affair with a dogged performance by Trinity earning them 3-12 to Mary I’s 3-20.

The month finished with more accolades for Trinity’s student athletes. Trinity Sport scholar and medical student Conall Hayes won the Athletics Ireland 800m in the U23 category, while fellow scholars in rugby, Jack Dunne, Michael Silvester and Max Kearney, got called up to the Ireland U20s squad for this year’s Six Nations tournament.
