Significant Milestone for New Student Information System – Online Fee Payments and Registration

Posted on: 05 September 2012

The third phase of Trinity College Dublin’s new Student Information System (SITS) went live on Thursday, August 23rd, for a number of TCD processes which were traditionally paper based, the most significant of these being the issuing of student fee requests online.

Over 12,000 student fee requests were generated on a phased basis from August 23rd. The main benefit of this is that fees are billed electronically which now enables students to view their fee balances and make payments online by credit, debit or laser card.

The next significant milestone for this phase of the GeneSIS project took place last week when the Academic Registry commenced registering students online. This means that students will no longer need to queue in order to register. Online registration will take place on a phased basis to ensure the system is not overloaded and invitations to register will be issued by course group as follows:

– Postgraduate students commenced registration on Wednesday, August 29th, 2012

– Undergraduate new entrants to commence registration on Wednesday September 5th,   2012

– Undergraduate continuing students to commence registration on Monday, September      10th 2012

Trinity students have been notified of when and how to gain access to the new Student Information System, to view student fee requests, and to complete fee payment and registration online. This information is also available to students of all courses on the College’s new student orientation pages at www.tcd.ie/orientation and online via the web portal at my.tcd.ie

In order to adequately cater for the online demand, Trinity has established a new Academic Registry (academic.registry@tcd.ie) incorporating staff from the College’s Student Fees, Admissions, International, Graduate Studies, Student Records, and Timetabling and Examinations offices.  As the GeneSIS project develops further, TCD staff will also benefit with increased functionality within the system giving them the ability to access student records, view timetables and all course and module data, and manage course applications online. The next significant component of the project involving assessment and progression is well in hand and a number of successful pilots have already taken place.

To date, 18,000 students have been migrated to the new system; the system has handled over 8,800 financial transactions; 150 students have fully registered online; almost 1,500 student email queries have been answered by the Academic Registry (the bulk of which are non-GeneSIS related); and over 4,000 students are logging on to my.tcd.ie on a daily basis.

The GeneSIS Project Team, in conjunction with the Academic Registry, the Treasurer’s Office, IS Services, and a number of other College offices, is responsible for creating the new integrated, user oriented academic and student administration service, facilitated by a modern student information system. It will provide appropriate and timely access to information relating to all stages of the student lifecycle, supported by an ethos of respect, accountability and professionalism.
