Secretary General of the Chinese Communist Party in Guangdong visits Trinity

Mr Hu Chunhua, Secretary General of the Chinese Communist Party, Guangdong province recently visited Trinity College Dublin. Joined by Mr Guohui Wen, Mayor of Guangzhou city, capital of Guangdong Province, HE Dr Xiaoyong Yue, Ambassador of PR China to Ireland and Mr Paul Kavanagh, Ambassador of Ireland, Beijing, the group visited AMBER and the Old Library.

An engaged discussed took place in AMBER, the SFI funded Advanced Materials and BioEngineering Research centre when the Chinese group met with Dr Diarmuid O’Brien, Trinity’s Chief Innovation and Enterprise Officer, Professor Michael Morris, Director, AMBER, Dr Lorraine Byrne, Executive Director, CRANN and AMBER, Dr Keith Alden, Business Development Manager, AMBER and Professor Mark Ferguson, Director General of SFI and the Chief Scientific Advisor to the government.

AMBER provides a partnership between leading researchers in materials science and industry. Its staff are researching materials that will transform everyday products of the future, from mobile phones to knee implants, batteries to beer bottles. AMBER links industry to research programmes and the aim of the centre is to develop products that directly impact everyone’s quality of life such as the development of the next generation computer chips and new medical implants and pharmaceuticals that will improve patient care.

A tour of the Old Library and Book of Kells exhibition followed conducted by the Vice-Provost, Professor Chris Morash, Deputy Librarian, Jessie Kurtz, and Anne-Marie Diffley, the Visitor Services Manager.
