Professor Samson Shatashvili honoured for contribution to quantum field theory

Professor Samson Shatashvili, director of the Hamilton Mathematics Institute and university professor of natural philosophy (1847) at Trinity, is being honoured for his contribution to quantum field theory by the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques (IHÉS), which is currently hosting a conference on the occasion of Professor Shatashvili’s 60th birthday.
The interactions between mathematics and physics have greatly intensified during the last three decades leading to a number of very significant breakthroughs in both fields, which have followed from new dialogues between mathematicians and theoretical physicists working on similar problems but using very different methods.
The conference will touch upon two important aspects of the interaction between mathematics and quantum field theory.
The conference is organised by Anton Alekseev of the Université de Genève and Maxim Konsevich of the IHÉS (Fields medalist and member of the Hamilton Mathematics Institute Board).
Invited speakers comprise leading mathematicians and theoretical physicists from around the world, including two academics from Trinity – Professor Sinéad Ryan, chair of theoretical high energy physics in the school of mathematics and Manuela Kulaxizi, assistant professor in mathematics.
Professor Ryan said: “The IHÉS Conference in honour of Professor Shatashvili’s contributions to Quantum Field Theory is a fitting tribute to his ground-breaking discoveries and the seminal role he has played in the development of a fruitful dialogue between mathematics and physics.”
“The renowned speakers who have travelled from around the world to honour Samson pay testament to his impact and standing in the field.”
The conference runs this week from the 10-14th February in IHÉS.
