Professor John Scattergood is Inaugurated as New Pro-Chancellor

Professor John Scattergood was admitted as a Pro-Chancellor of the University of Dublin (Trinity College) at a special ceremony on November 24 last. In his role as Pro-Chancellor, Professor Scattergood is now a member of the University Senate and may deputise for the Chancellor, Dr. Mary Robinson.
Professor Scattergood began his career at Trinity College in 1980 as the foundation Professor of Medieval and Renaissance Literature in the Department of English and has served as both Head of Department and as Chairman of the School of English. Other college posts held by him include: Senior Lecturer (1984-87, 1990-91); Dean of the Faculty of Arts (Letters) (1996-99, 1999-2001); Senior Proctor (2002-05); and Vice-Dean of Arts and Humanities (2005-06).
Professor Scattergood achieved his Degree of Doctor of Letters in 2002 for his published works and he has been recognized for his academic work through a number of distinctions including election to Fellowship of Trinity College Dublin in 1981 and a member of the Royal Irish Academy in 1991.
Since his retirement in September 2006, Professor Scattergood has continued to work with Trinity College contributing to both academic and administrative areas as well as continuing his research and writings. Recently Professor Scattergood has worked internationally in Europe and New Zealand, teaching a postgraduate course for two months in the University of Utrecht, Netherlands and chairing a committee reviewing the Arts and Social Sciences Faculty of the University of Waikato, New Zealand. In October he returned from Merton College in Oxford where he held the position of Senior Visiting Research Fellow.
