The Nigerian monarch, His Imperial Majesty, The Oooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Babatunde Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, and his Royal entourage paid a courtesy call to the Trinity Centre for Literary and Cultural Translation during his recent visit to Ireland.
Accompanied by the Ambassador of Nigeria to Ireland, HE.Dr. (Mrs) Uzoma Emenike, discussions explored how the Centre might develop educational and cultural collaborations with universities and cultural organisations in Nigeria. His Imperial Majesty spoke of his great interest in language and culture and expressed his wish that the relationship between Trinity and Nigerian universities might be further developed.
The Royal party met with Dr James Hadley, Ussher Assistant Professor in Literary Translation and Director of the MPhil in Literary Translation, who spoke about the work of the Centre and he presented work from two of the MPhil students who were also at the event.
From its home at 36 Fenian Street, the Trinity Centre for Literary and Cultural Translation brings the best of Irish writing to the world and the best of foreign languages and cultures to Ireland. An integral part of the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultural Studies, the Centre is engaged in educating the next generation of literary translators, building a research community in translation studies, hosting international visiting translators and organising events that showcase the literatures and cultures of Dublin city’s many languages.
The Royal party viewed ‘Inspiring Generations – the Campaign for Trinity College Dublin’ video outlining the recently launched largest philanthropic campaign ever undertaken on the island of Ireland.
Inspiring Generations will further the ambition of the Centre to become a recognised global hub for cross-cultural exchange and intercultural research. The Centre is actively engaging with embassies and cultural organisations to develop meaningful collaborations towards this ambition.
