New gym space officially opened

Posted on: 09 November 2017

Trinity Sport have officially opened their new gym space. Chief Operating Officer Geraldine Ruane, Head of Sport Michelle Tanner, Students Union President Kevin Keane and Dean of Students Kevin O’Kelly were on hand to mark the occasion.

The gym reconfiguration project, which began in May and culminated in August, was designed to allow for increased capacity in the Sports Centre. In 2015-2016 the centre saw visitor numbers rise by seven per cent, to 368,000, compared to the previous year.

The increased capacity in the fitness theatre and elsewhere in the building has clearly been a hit with students. Since September 1 this year the Sports Centre has already recorded 46,441 visits by students.

The Student Forum had a key role to play in the project and their voice was represented by fifth year mechanical engineering student Tiarnan O’Kelly and recent graduate Ciara Browne.

Tiarnan commented on the project: “Thankfully, due to the efforts of the Trinity Sport staff, we have been able to fulfil our promise made during the campaign to increase the gym levy. Hopefully we can take the momentum of this progress to one day provide a world class facility in Trinity. The student body is very thankful to everyone who made this possible.”

The gym reconfiguration project was part of a planned facility upgrade laid out in the current strategy for sport, ‘Raising our Game’.
