Minister for Health Launches New Support Service Website, Videos & i- book for Students with Asperger’s Syndrome at Trinity College Dublin/ Láithreán Gréasáin Seirbhíse Tacaíochta Nua do Mhic Léinn a bhfuil Siondróm Asperger ag dul dóibh

A Support Service Website for Students with Asperger’s Syndrome featuring seven videos of students discussing their experiences of university life with Asperger’s Syndrome and also Trinity College Dublin’s first i-book entitled the ‘The A-Z of AS’ by the late Dr Zehanne Kenny was launched today (Thursday, November 3rd, 11 am) by the Minister for Health, Dr James Reilly at Trinity College Dublin.

Trinity College Dublin, like other third level institutions, has seen a rise in the number of students accessing the university with disabilities.  In particular one of the greatest increases in student numbers attending university are those individuals with Asperger’s Syndrome (AS).  Over the past four years the number of students with Asperger’s Syndrome utilising supports from the Disability Service and Unilink Service in Trinity College has increased five-fold, and Trinity College now has the highest number of students with Asperger’s Syndrome studying in Ireland (AHEAD, 2010), currently there are 36 students with Asperger’s Syndrome availing of supports.  The Trinity College Disability Service in collaboration with the Unilink Service have developed a model of support for students with AS which aims to support the students at all stages in their student journey from College entrance to graduation and employment.  Students have the opportunity to avail of one-to-one sessions with an occupational therapist on a weekly basis and also avail of a social leisure enhancement group which focuses on integration into the social aspects of College life.

Welcoming the new support services and publications to assist third level students with Asperger’s Syndrome, Minister Reilly said: “I am greatly encouraged that students with Asperger’s Syndrome in higher education in Trinity College are being supported to achieve their potential as they progress through college. I commend the college for taking this initiative and I am confident that it will greatly enhance the students’ experience of everyday college life.”

The transition from school to university can be difficult for many students as they are presented with a myriad of challenges to tackle and master, College life is particularly more difficult for those students with AS.  As the identification of Asperger’s Syndrome increases, it can be expected that more students with Asperger’s Syndrome will enter higher education.

The newly launched website is a student-initiative supported by the Trinity Disability and Unilink Service, in order to provide a medium in which to encourage individuals with Asperger’s Syndrome to think about Trinity College as a possible university in which to further their education.  The website hosts seven videos of Trinity students discussing their personal experiences of college life and the topics they address include:

– An Introduction to Trinity College

– Advice for First Year Students

– Information on popular Trinity College Courses

– Perspectives of students studying at postgraduate level

The videos were shot on campus over the past academic year and give insight into Trinity life through the eyes of the students.  These videos were partly funded by Trinity College Equality Fund.

TCD Occupational Therapist in the Unilink Service, Claire Gleeson, speaking about the launch of this website said: “This website provides information on the life of students with Asperger’s Syndrome in university, it aims to raise awareness and create an understanding of the experiences students with Asperger’s Syndrome face in college and promotes Trinity College as an inclusive environment.  The website will be of benefit and a useful resource to any member of the College staff and also external agencies   which may work with university students or prospective third level students with Asperger’s Syndrome.” The videos are also downloadable from the iTunes website.

The website also hosts Trinity College’s first iBook called the ‘The A to Z of AS’ written by Dr Zehanne Kenny who was an Associate Researcher and graduand of the School of English in TCD. This booklet is written with the aim of helping students and people with Asperger’s Syndrome to deal with some of the difficulties they face in the world and how to navigate through typical situations that most of us may take for granted. Director of the Disability Service in TCD, Declan Treanor, who assisted Dr Kenny in the production of this iBook said: “Many students coming into a strange and unfamiliar environment such as University, with all the pressures of academic and social life, may feel overwhelmed and frustrated in such a new world, this iBook will help them work out strategies to deal with everyday situations.”

Zehanne writing from her own experience as a student with AS has provided many stories and tips to help students deal with the problems they face as they integrate into college life’. This iBook will be informative, educational and allow both those with AS and those who want to understand how people with AS interact in everyday situations.

Go sonrach, baineann ceann de na méaduithe is mó leis an líon mac léinn a bhfuil Siondróm Asperger (AS) ag dul dóibh agus atá ag freastal ar an ollscoil. Agus é ag fáiltiú roimh na seirbhísí tacaíochta nua agus na bhfoilseacháin nua chun cabhrú le mic léinn tríú leibhéil a bhfuil Siondróm Asperger ag dul dóibh, dúirt an tAire Reilly: “Is mór an spreagadh dom go bhfuil mic léinn a bhfuil Siondróm Asperger ag dul dóibh agus atá san ardoideachas i gColáiste na Tríonóide ag fáil tacaíochta chun a lánacmhainneacht a bhaint amach ag iad ag dul chun cinn sa choláiste. Molaim an coláiste as an tionscnamh seo a thabhairt ar lámh agus táim cinnte go gcuirfidh sé go mór le taithí na mac léinn ar ghnáthshaol an choláiste.”

Bíonn an t-athrú ón scoil go dtí an ollscoil deacair do go leor mac léinn de bharr go mbíonn an iliomad dúshlán le sárú acu agus le máistreacht a fháil orthu. Bíonn saol an Choláiste níos deacra do mhic léinn a bhfuil AS ag dul dóibh. De réir mar a thagann méadú ar an aitheantas ar Shiondróm Asperger, is féidir a bheith ag súil go rachaidh níos mó mac léinn a bhfuil Siondróm Asperger ag dul dóibh isteach san ardoideachas.

Is tionscnaimh mac léinn atá sa láithreán gréasáin nua-sheolta, arna thacú ag Seirbhís Mhíchumais agus Unilink Choláiste na Tríonóide, d’fhonn modh a chur ar fáil chun daoine a bhfuil Siondróm Asperger ag dul dóibh a spreagadh smaoineamh ar Choláiste na Tríonóide mar ollscoil ina bhféadfadh siad leanúint ar aghaidh lena gcuid oideachais. Tá an láithreán gréasáin ina óstach freisin ar an gcéad ríomhLeabhar de chuid Choláiste na Tríonóide, dar teideal ‘The A to Z of AS’, a scríobh an Dr. Zehanne Kenny, a bhí ina Taighdeoir Comhlach agus a bhain céim amach i Scoil an Bhéarla TCD. Scríobhadh an leabhrán sin agus é mar aidhm leis cabhrú le mic léinn a bhfuil Siondróm Asperger ag dul dóibh déileáil le roinnt de na deacrachtaí a bhíonn rompu sa saol agus déileáil le tosca tipiciúla nach gcruthaíonn deacracht ar bith do go leor daoine eile. Dúirt Stiúrthóir na Seirbhíse Míchumais in TCD, Declan Treanor, a chabhraigh leis an Dr.  Kenny an ríomhLeabhar seo a tháirgeadh: “D’fhéadfadh go leor mac léinn a thagann isteach chuig timpeallacht nua agus aisteach mar an Ollscoil, ina bhfuil an iliomad brúnna acadúla agus sóisialta, brú mór agus frustrachas a mhothú sa domhan nua sin. Cabhróidh an ríomhLeabhar seo leo teacht ar straitéisí chun déileáil le gnáth-thosca laethúla.”

Scríobh Zehanne óna taithí féin mar mhac léinn a raibh AS ag dul di agus is iomaí scéal agus leid a chuir sí ar fáil chun cabhrú le mic léinn déileáil leis na fadhbanna a bhíonn rompu agus iad ag dul isteach i saol an choláiste’. Beidh an ríomhLeabhar seo eolasach, oideachasúil agus tabharfaidh sé cúnamh do dhaoine a bhfuil AS ag dul dóibh agus do dhaoine ar mian leo tuiscint a fháil ar an tslí a ndéanann daoine a bhfuil AS ag dul dóibh caidreamh le daoine eile ó lá go lá.
