Living your best life after cancer: public symposium at Trinity

Ireland’s top cancer clinicians, researchers and scientists from St James’s Hospital and Trinity College Dublin will gather on Friday, with a host of international experts for a two-day conference on advancing clinical research for the benefit of cancer patients, both here in Ireland and across the globe.

The Trinity St James’s Cancer Institute’s (TSJCI) 12th International Cancer Conference, takes place at the Trinity Biomedical Sciences Institute, and this year focusses on the theme of “harnessing fundamental, translational and clinical research for the benefit of cancer patients,” in recognition of the major advances made in cancer prevention, precision oncology, cancer immunology and cancer survivorship.

Importantly, the second day presents a public symposium - open to all - that will see a wide range of Irish and International speakers presenting research on the many issues that are experienced by those living with and beyond Cancer (and by those close to them). Expert topics covered will include: patient care post-COVID, exercise for people living with and beyond cancer, cancer survivorship and cancer immunotherapy and immunology.

Launch of Cancer Rehabilitation website

Also on Friday Dr Emer Guinan and Dr Louise Brennan from the Trinity Exercise Oncology Group will launch a new Cancer Rehabilitation website developed with funding from the Irish Cancer Society. 

CancerRehabilitation.ie is accessible, easy to navigate and aims to support people living with and beyond cancer to become more active to improve their physical and mental wellbeing. Excitingly, the website contains a national directory of exercise and rehabilitation services suitable for people living with and beyond cancer – this is a unique resource for cancer survivors in Ireland and we hope will help people find and access services to support their recovery.

TSJCI’s Catherine O Brien will speak on the development of survivorship services provided by the cancer institute.

Looking ahead, experts Professors Maeve Lowery and John Kennedy will also present the latest research that looks to the future of cancer care.

Professor Juliette Hussey, Professor of cancer rehabilitation and survivorship, Trinity College, said: 

“ With up to 80% of people living with and beyond cancer experiencing physical effects there is a growing need for rehabilitation and survivorship services. The public symposium will explore the many issues that arise and how they can be managed to improve  overall quality of life.”
