‘Growing Up Live’ broadcasting from Trinity as part of Science Week 2018
Posted on: 14 November 2018
All this week, the science programme Growing Up Live is broadcasting live from Trinity’s wonderful Anatomy Museum from 7-8pm, presented by Angela Scanlon along with co-presenters, Deirdre and Ruairi Robertson.
Supported by Science Foundation Ireland as part of Science Week 2018, Growing Up Live tracks human life from birth to death and everything in between with a series of experiments and studies.
From genetics to gerontology this show will use biology, technology and even a little engineering, to answer some of life’s most interesting questions; How do babies acquire language? Why do teenagers take risks? Why are we attracted to some people? Why do we go bald?
Some of Trinity’s leading researchers are taking part in the three-part series. In the first episode we saw Professor in Medical Education Martina Hennessy explain some of the amazing specimens in Trinity’s Anatomy Museum, including the skeleton of Cornelius Magrath, known as the Irish giant as a result of his condition, gigantism.
She is joined by Professor in Medical Gerontology Joe Harbison and Anatomy Chief Technical Officer, Siobhan Ward in the course of the week who will tell us more about the museum’s medical specimens, which have taught generations of medical students.
The secrets of our DNA will be revealed by Professor in Genetics Aoife McLysaght and successful ageing will be discussed by Professor of Medical Gerontology, Rose Anne Kenny, who is lead academic of The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (TILDA). Giving us all a helping hand in old age will be assistive technology and Professor Conor McGinn will tell us more about ‘Stevie’ the Robot.
There will be live experiments every night with a participating audience along with some well known Irish personalities such as Peter Stringer and leading scientists such as Prof Niall Moyna.
Tune in to find out more about our minds and bodies: How does age affect the amount of risk we attach to our decisions? And what does the way we sit down or stand up tell us about our life expectancy?
Growing Up, Live is airing all week on the 13th, 14th and 15th of November at 7pm on RTÉ One.
