Grattan Scholarships awarded in Energy Economics and International Development

The School of Social Sciences and Philosophy awarded two prestigious Grattan Scholarships to postgraduate students in Energy Economics and International Development. Grattan Scholarships are awarded to outstanding PhD students who are committed to understanding and improving society through their research, teaching and education. Sixteen scholarships have been awarded to students from eleven countries since the programme was established in 2012.

Grattan Scholars are undertaking important research which addresses some of the major challenges of our time such as migration, inequality and financial globalisation. In 2017, the breadth of the Scholars' research was further expanded with a scholarship being awarded in energy and environmental economics for the first time. In addition, The Grattan Scholars programme has now provided funding for four PhD students in field of development economics – helping to ensure that Trinity continues to undertake research, at the highest academic level, that contributes to the global debate on the economic development process and the underlying mechanisms at work.

Recipients of the 2017 Grattan Scholarships are:

• Stefano Ceolotto – who is undertaking research titled "The Influence of Moral Licensing and Magnitude Effect on Pro-Environmental Behaviours under the supervision of Eleanor Denny.
• Friedrich Kreuser – who will undertake research into the role and transmission of technology in the economy under the supervision of Carol Newman.

Professor Gail McElroy, Head of the School of Social Sciences and Philosophy commented that “the School of Social Sciences and Philosophy is delighted to welcome this year’s scholars, Stefano and Friedrich, to Trinity. The Grattan Scholars programme has flourished since it was established by the School five years ago;  it is now an international community of exceptional PhD students who are committed to understanding and improving society through their research and education. Examples of the excellent students we have attracted include a Ukrainian student who is researching child labour in Vietnam, an Irish student who is examining the causes of anti-immigration attitudes in Europe and an Italian student who is exploring the economics of city regrowth in Ireland. Of course none of this would have been possible without the extraordinary generosity of our donors, and we are truly grateful for their continued support.”
