Faculty Forum celebrates Trinity’s newly named Faculty of STEM

Posted on: 01 March 2021

Researchers, staff and students came together today (digitally) to celebrate Trinity’s newly named Faculty of STEM at a special Faculty forum. The forum highlighted some of the excellent research, projects and initiatives to have taken place over the past 12, uniquely challenging, months.

The Faculty of STEM was previously named the Faculty of Engineering, Mathematics and Science (EMS).

Explaining the significance of the change, Professor Sylvia Draper, Dean of the Faculty of STEM, said:

“This year, reflecting the need to communicate what we do in a way that resonates more clearly with our stakeholders, we changed the name of the Faculty to the ‘Faculty of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics’.

While this may seem a small change, it allows us to showcase more clearly just how these disciplines contribute to the technologies, devices and materials that make a difference to our lives, and the health of the planet.”

Highlights of the forum included:

  • keynote talks from recently appointed Chair researchers in the faculty (Professors Iris Moeller, Ortwin Hess, and Stephen Spence)
  • a talk from Trinity student, Shubhangi Karmakar, current editor of the student-run Trinity Student Scientific Review (TSSR) journal
  • a presentation from secondary school students, Yaduvir Harhangi and Marton Goz, who won the Trinity College Dublin Faculty of STEM-funded prize at the 2021 BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition
  • the announcement of the winners of the Faculty of STEM Green lab initiative
  • the announcement of the winner of the STEM Image Competition – first prize goes to Dr Arpad Palfi in the category Research in TCD STEM.

Winner in the category of Teaching in TCD STEM was Jean Williams, whose shot showcases PhD Fieldwork in Magheramore Beach, Co Wicklow.
