Students from Gonzaga College, Dublin are the winners of this year’s Ireland’s Team Mathematics Quiz held in Trinity College.
Organised by the Hamilton Mathematics Institute TCD and the Irish Mathematics Teachers Association, with support from Citigroup Foundation, 11 regional champion teams competed for the Hamilton Trophy.
The winning students Mark Grennan, Cian Hughes, Paul Murphy and Jonathan Wyse and their Maths teacher, Denis Cusack, celebrated their victory with the Provost of Trinity College, Dr John Hegarty and Citigroup’s Bernard Hanratty. 260 teams nationwide participated in the nationwide competition which was based on the Leaving Certificate Higher Maths syllabus.
Bernard Hanratty, Director, Global Fund Services, Citigroup stated that “Citigroup is delighted to have been involved with this event. It is most encouraging to see so many teachers give up their valuable personal time and energy in pursuit of education. The 11 regional winners should be very proud of their participation in the national final. Citigroup hopes to provide a commercial context to the Team Maths quiz, helping students understand that mathematics can pave the way to a varied, challenging and rewarding career”.
In addition to being presented with the Hamilton Trophy, the winning team has been offered one week’s work experience in Trinity College, including its SFI Nanoscience Laboratory in addition to a visit to the Citigroup offices in the IFSC.
The Hamilton Mathematics Institute TCD is an institute dedicated to fostering mathematics and related disciplines. Named after William Rowan Hamilton, the Institute also aims to improve the public understanding of mathematics.
