Dublin Dental Hospital to Host Mouth Cancer Information Day

Mouth Cancer Awareness Day takes place on 21st September this year.

Mouth cancer is an important global healthcare problem. There are more than 300 cases of cancer of the mouth (oral cavity and pharynx) reported in Ireland every year. In the UK, the incidence of mouth cancer has increased faster than any other cancer in the past 25 years.

Early detection of mouth cancer greatly improves chances of survival.  Dentists have a key role to play in the early detection of mouth cancer and in the prevention of the disease by identifying those patients who are exposed to risk factors. You are encouraged to ask your dentist to check for signs of mouth cancer as part of your regular dental check-up during the year.

The Dublin Dental University Hospital will host an Information Day on Wednesday 21st September, in order to increase awareness about mouth cancer, its signs, symptoms and risk factors.

Information and advice will be provided in the Dublin Dental University Hospital by the Dental Health Foundation, Irish Cancer Society, Alcohol Action Ireland, ARC Cancer Support Centre, Dental Hygiene students “Smoking Cessation” and Dental students “Check Your Own Mouth”. The event is sponsored by Pamex and DeCare.

The Dublin Dental University Hospital will not be offering free mouth checks, however all around the country participating Dentists will be providing a free mouth cancer check up on the day.  You are encouraged to visit www.mouthcancerawareness.ie to find your nearest participating dentist.
