DU Women’s Graduate Association Donates Book Proceeds to TAP

In January the culmination of over a decade of work on the book ‘A Danger to the Men? A History of Women in Trinity College Dublin 1904-2004’ came to an end when DUWGA President Hilary Roche presented a cheque for €9,000 to the Trinity Access Programme (TAP)
Thanking the DUWGA team who had worked on the book since 1995, and the many contributors, several of whom attended the presentation, TAP Access Officer Cliona Hannon highlighted that both Susan Parkes and Deirdre Raftery deserved special credit for the vital role they had played in both the foundation of TAP in 1993 and the writing of the history of women in Trinity College.
“I see there are important links between our work and the change documented in this history of women’s admission to Trinity College. It too is a record of social change, and this book documents how that happened over a century,” stated Cliona Hannon, “It was perhaps the first really significant challenge to the status quo within the College, in terms of the make-up of the student body. The challenges for this century will be different and will focus on social class, and on ethnicity.
“It seems fitting that the proceeds from the sale of the TCD women’s history will be used to support a younger generation of newcomers to come to College,” said Ms Roche.
The launch of the book ‘A Danger to the Men’ was part of the College’s centenary celebrations in 2005 marking 100 years of the admission of women students to Trinity. The funding from the DUGWA will go towards the further development of the Primary and Second Level Programmes run by TAP.
