The Director of the Division of Radiation Therapy, School of Medicine, Mrs Mary Coffey, recently received the prestigious Emmanuel van der Schueren Award in recognition of her contribution to radiation oncology.
Mrs Coffey has been instrumental in the education of radiation therapists worldwide, and was one of the founding members of the Radiation Therapists Committee of the European Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ESTRO). She is internationally renowned for her work in radiation oncology, and acts as a consultant to major organisations, such as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), World Health Organisation (WHO), European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) and the European Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ESTRO). This award is given in honour of the founding father of ESTRO in recognition of leadership in the field of oncology, and for scientific work, involvement in education, and promotion of radiation oncology as a discipline.
Those honoured with the medal are also invited to deliver the Emmanuel van der Schueren lecture at the Society’s annual meeting, which Mrs Coffey delivered at the Conference of the European CanCer Organisation (ECCO) this year in Berlin.
