Posted on: 17 January 2019

To mark Data Protection Day 2019, Trinity College Dublin will host a number of events on Thursday 24th January including a free public event exploring some of the biggest issues in data protection, a drop in Data Clinic for staff, students and members of the public, and the Philosophical Society (The Phil) will discuss the motion ‘This House Regrets the Creation of the Internet’.

Data Protection Day: Panel Discussion, 6.30 – 7.30pm, Robert Emmet Theatre, Arts Building

How do you strike a balance between public protection and personal privacy? While new technologies have the potential to keep us safer, is it at the expense of our right to privacy? Join us for a lively discussion led by Elaine Burke, managing editor of Silicon Republic. Panellists include solicitor at PG McMahon, Rossa McMahon who has a particular interest in data protection and privacy; lecturer in Law at Maynooth University, Dr Maria Helen Murphy, whose research is in the areas of privacy law, surveillance, data protection, information technology law, and human rights; and computer engineer, Professor Jane Grimson, who is Fellow Emerita and Pro-Chancellor at Trinity.

All are welcome. Admission free. To register please click here

Drop in Data Clinic, 10am – 12pm, Science Gallery Dublin

This clinic will offer advice on a wide range of data protection and IT security issues ranging from protecting your personal data in your day to day lives to advice for researchers who collect and analyse personal and sensitive data in their professional work. With data becoming one of our most valuable resources and privacy becoming increasing vulnerable to new technologies, it is more important than ever to protect your data from breaches and hackers. We’ll have IT and legal professionals on hand to give you the best advice on keeping your data safe or what to if your data has been compromised.

These events are organised by Trinity College Dublin’s Information Compliance Office, Information Technology Services and Science Gallery Dublin to mark Data Protection Day 2019.
