Careers Week 2011 Offers Students Employment Advice and Support
Posted on: 03 October 2011
TCD Careers Week offers students the opportunity to learn about a variety of careers, meet employers and find out about postgraduate study options. The week-long event, which runs from Monday 3rd to Friday 7th October, is organised by the Careers Advisory Service, supported by the Students’ Union and sponsored by Deloitte, features a number of employers, graduates and professional bodies representing a wide range of sectors.
This year, to reflect the challenges facing the economy, Careers Week is covering a wide variety of careers both in Ireland and abroad. Among the information session are job opportunities in the EU, funding work in the creative arts and starting your own business. Other sessions will focus on how to find a job using social media and a workshop for those who are uncertain of which career path to take.
Speaking about Careers Week, Director of the Careers Advisory Service, Sean Gannon, said: “This week of intensive careers activities is a natural introduction to a very busy semester in terms of graduate recruitment. It is followed by the GradIreland Graduate Careers Fair in the RDS on 12th October where the organisers are already talking in terms of the availability of over 1000 graduate jobs. As the semester progresses other companies will be visiting Dublin and the campus to present their opportunities. At a time when there is a lot of negative feeling about the job market, this is very encouraging news.”
Careers Week presents a comprehensive programme of events and talks that has something for everyone, covering areas such as journalism, development, marketing, the arts, translation, finance, IT and the green sector. A broad spectrum of organisations will be present during the week including Google, RTÉ, Facebook, Newstalk 106-108FM, Abbott, the Irish Museums Association, Music Network and many more. A series of skills workshops covering writing CVs, completing application forms, interview skills and assessment centres will also run throughout the week, facilitated by HR personnel from larger employers and by Trinity Careers Advisers. Students interested in postgraduate study in Ireland and abroad will also be catered for.
The Graduate Careers Fair will take place on Wednesday, October 12th in the RDS and features over 120 graduate recruiters, course providers and professional bodies from Ireland and the UK. The TCD Law Fair featuring a number of high profile law firms will be held in the Atrium on October 11th next.
