Trinity student Jack Kavanagh who draws on the personal challenges he has faced in overcoming and thriving in the face of the perceived obstacles of his spinal cord injury was the subject of a documentary broadcast on 3e yesterday evening.
In 2012, after completing his first year of study at Trinity, Jack broke his neck and was paralysed, in a windsurfing accident. In the years since the accident, Jack has shown extraordinary courage in overcoming adversity.
The documentary, Breaking Boundaries, follows Jack as he fulfills a promise made prior to the accident, agreeing that he would travel the world with friend David Henry. The journey brings them to amazing places and introduces them to some amazing people. As they eat up the Californian miles, they get to skydive over Perris, camp out in Yosemite and hang out with U2.
Talking about his travels, Jack said: “We learned a lot about ourselves on the trip, but more importantly it was the end of one chapter and the beginning of something very new. When we came home from America, all of us were inspired because we had shown that we could achieve anything. Obstacles no longer seem like obstacles and I am embracing even more challenges because I began to relish that uncomfortable place in which you exist when you are challenged – developing, adapting and overcoming. This journey was important to me… It proved to me that I could achieve anything in my life.”
