Brain disorders and innovation summer school attracts international students

Posted on: 21 June 2019

A summer school focusing on brain disorders and innovation has attracted students from across the globe, with the aim of helping them bridge the gap between fundamental academic research and commercialisation activities.

Biology in Brain Disorders 2019: Frontiers in Innovation (BBD) is a scientific and educational event organised by Assistant Professor in Molecular Psychiatry at Trinity, Dr Daniela Tropea. It is running until June 25.

The students at BBD 2019, who are now on the path to understanding how to commercialise research.

Following the success of the first BBD event in 2016, this year’s edition combines a rich scientific programme with a novel component in innovation.Top speakers in science and innovation, including experts from Tangent, Trinity’s Ideas Workspace, will deliver activities that foster learning, interaction and critical thinking.

The first part of the summer school took place at Rock Farm Slane and Slane Castle, where international speakers educated the students on the basic concepts and the latest updates in the research of brain disorders. From today on, the students will be based in Trinity, where the Tangent team in the new Trinity Business School will teach them how to develop ideas and innovate in the field of brain disorders.

Initial lectures focus on the core elements of the subject in order to access the more advanced topics, while workshops give the tools to solve practical problems, such as data analysis and market strategies.

Dr Tropea said:

The 2019 edition of BBD is particularly successful for the merging of science and innovation. The students learned the state of the art on brain disorders from top international scientists in academia and industry. Now the Tangent team will lead them through the path to innovation so they can implement their ideas on how to improve the lives of patients with brain disorders and their families.

This unique combination will have a major impact in the field of brain disorders and also in the personal development of each student.

The event is sponsored by an award given by EIT Health, while other contributors include Trinity’s Department of Psychiatry and Medical School, the Trinity Institute of Neuroscience, Roche, FutureNeuro, and EuroLife.
