Abbey hosts Kennelly celebration

Poets, singers, friends and the President gathered in the Abbey Theatre at the weekend to celebrate the legacy of Fellow Emeritus Brendan Kennelly, who turned 80 in April.

In addition to being Professor of Modern Literature at the School of English until his retirement in 2005, Brendan is also known as one of Ireland’s greatest poets. At the Abbey, following an introduction by fellow Kerryman Jimmy Deenihan, Brendan read from some of his works to a rapt audience.

Earlier, this celebration of words and song – which was sold out well in advance – featured contributions from singers Mary Black, Lisa Lambe, the last surviving member of The Dubliners, John Sheahan, and Noel O’Grady, who did a rendition of ‘The Rose of Tralee’. Speakers included Mannix Flynn and poet Stephen Murphy. Also in attendance was Brendan's former colleague from the School of English, Emeritus Professor Terence Brown.

President Michael D Higgins brought proceedings to a close by highlighting the immense influence Brendan has had on Irish life.
