Trinity chemistry student, Áine Coogan, joins prestigious CAS Future Leaders™ Program

Áine is among the exceptional early-career scientists selected from a large pool of global candidates who applied for a spot in the programme, which is regarded as one of the best leadership learning experiences in science.

Áine said: “I'm so grateful to have been selected to be part of this year's CAS Future Leaders Program! Having just successfully defended my materials chemistry PhD on Friday, it really feels like everything I've worked for over the last few years has finally come full circle. 

“I'm looking forward to meeting researchers from all over the world and honing my leadership skills. This opportunity is coming at the perfect time as I prepare for a transition into the world of academia. I'm also very excited to be able to attend and present my research at an American Chemical Society conference for the first time as part of the award. 

“Above all, I want to use the CAS Future Leaders program as a platform to show that despite our small population, Ireland has a vibrant, talented chemistry community that, if given the right support, is poised to make impactful research and technological contributions on the global stage.”

The 2024 selectees are a diverse group, hailing from 13 countries, working at 33 graduate or post-doctoral programmes, and specialising in scientific disciplines that span computer-aided drug design, atmospheric/environmental chemistry, sustainable polymers, and cancer diagnostics.

“CAS Future Leaders offers early-career scientists the opportunity to participate in leadership and storytelling seminars, learn from industry thought leaders how to present their ideas in an impactful manner, engage in scientific discourse, and develop connections with peer scientists from around the world,” said Peter Carlton, CAS Future Leaders Program director.
