School of Nursing & Midwifery receives Bronze Athena Swan Award
Posted on: 06 December 2024
The School of Nursing & Midwifery has achieved a Bronze Athena Swan Award, recognising its dedication to advancing gender equality and fostering inclusivity across academic, learning, and healthcare environments. This significant milestone underscores the School’s ongoing commitment to creating a fair, inclusive, and diverse community.
This award reflects the remarkable efforts of the students and staff on the School’s Self-Assessment Team who have championed the principles of the Athena Swan Charter within the School. Special thanks to Amhairgín Ní Laoi, Athena Swan Project Manager for the Faculty of Health Sciences, who has supported and guided the team every step of the way.
Nursing and midwifery is female-dominated, and the School of Nursing & Midwifery is committed to implementing a robust five-year action plan with several priority themes including enhancing male representation within the professions and academia, supporting a more balanced and diverse future for nursing and midwifery in Ireland.
Dr. Damien Brennan, Head of the School of Nursing & Midwifery, celebrated the achievement, stating:
“The Bronze Athena Swan Award is a very significant milestone in our School’s development. The achievement of this award would not have been possible without the active engagement of the whole School community with the Athena Swan Charter. I would particularly like to thank the members of the Self-Assessment Team and, of course, Dr. Vivienne Brady for her outstanding leadership and care in overseeing this application process.”
Dr. Vivienne Brady, Assistant Professor in Midwifery and Athena Swan Champion, reflected on the importance of the achievement, noting:
“This is a really exciting development for our School and recognition of our values and commitment to principles of fairness, inclusion, and equality. We look forward to implementing our action plan together and seeing positive impact in the weeks, months, and years ahead. We are grateful for the work of our students and staff, the School leadership, and the support of our colleagues in Trinity’s Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Office.”
Congratulations once again to the School of Nursing & Midwifery.
