Posted on: 21 June 2024

The book looks as key areas such as Irish Jewish historiography, communal traditions, antisemitism, nationalism (Jewish and Irish) and representations in popular media.

The launch has taken place at Trinity College Dublin of a book of essays about the modern history of Irish Jews.

Minister for Public Expenditure Paschal Donohoe (below centre) launched the book, entitled Reimagining the Jews of Ireland: Historiography, Identity and Representation, which was edited by Dr Zuleika Rodgers and Dr Natalie Wynn (below, left and second left) from the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultural Studies’ Centre for Jewish Studies.

The book looks as key areas such as Irish Jewish historiography, communal traditions, antisemitism, nationalism (Jewish and Irish) and representations in popular media. The launch was hosted by the Dept of Near and Middle Eastern Studies and Holocaust Awareness Ireland. Joining the celebrations for this volume was the Provost, Dr Linda Doyle, and Oliver Sears, founder of Holocaust Awareness Ireland (pictured above).

Dr Zuleika Rodgers, Associate Professor in Jewish Studies, said: "I'm delighted that the book is being launched here at Trinity College Dublin, home to the only Centre for Jewish Studies in Ireland. The Centre has developed as a hub for Irish Jewish Studies and the volume represents a new era for the study of Jewish Ireland."

The contributors to this volume are re-writing the history of the Jews of Ireland and revising how this long-established minority has been represented. Published by Peter Lang in their Reimagining Ireland series, this volume is a groundbreaking contribution offering new interpretations and approaches.
