Provost's Innovation Challenge 2023

It was another successful year for the Provost’s Innovation Challenge at Tangent, Trinity’s Ideas Workspace, our flagship hackathon which aims to develop solutions to some of today’s most pressing social issues.
The Provost’s Innovation Challenge which took place in Tangent, Trinity’s Ideas Workspace from 10 - 12 February was very well supported by Trinity College. Students gathered in the main space of Tangent - the ideal venue designed to foster creativity and innovative thinking.
Students gathered on Friday evening and formed teams as they set up for the 3-day hackathon. Provost, Linda Doyle arrived as momentum gathered and chatted with students as they teased out their ideas.
As the hackathon continued on Saturday morning, teams explored ideas on how to solve the Student Accommodation Crisis. They had one on one sessions with mentors and gained good insights from workshops throughout the day.
The energy was high on Sunday as teams prepared the pitches they would make later that day. Excitement was building as Shane Burke, Head of Research, the Housing Agency arrived to join the judging panel on Sunday afternoon and shortly after teams began their presentations to judges.
There were many innovative solutions to the student accommodation crisis generated over the weekend and the judges were tasked with picking the winners. After some deliberation, the winners were selected:
1st place Nest Exchange
2nd place Repurpose
The 2023 Provost Innovation Challenge was a great success. Students want to make a positive impact on society, and the world around them, and that’s what this challenge is all about. Trinity has a long-standing commitment to social innovation, which is crucial to addressing some of the most pressing issues facing society today, and to preventing global crises of the future.
There have also been many success stories from the Provost Innovation Challenge in previous years including the launch of Foodcloud, a social enterprise that helps businesses redistribute surplus food to those who need it. Nest Exchange and Repurpose will now join the success stories that have been born out of the Provost Innovation Challenge. We wish the teams continued success.
