Provost's Fellowship in Curating 2022-23

Through hands-on work and mentorship, the Fellow is given insight into the daily workings of the organisation and its programme, while contributing to discourses within the Gallery, Trinity College and further afield. The Fellowship, which is generously supported by the Office of the Provost, fosters new generations of arts professionals by giving practical experience of working within one of Ireland’s leading contemporary art spaces.

As Provost Linda Doyle announces "I want to congratulate Aisling Clark on being awarded the Provost’s Fellowship in Curating at The Douglas Hyde. Aisling will be working with an amazing team at The Douglas Hyde and I hope this fellowship will be a significant step in an exciting and creative career. The Gallery is an outstanding space for contemporary art in Ireland and this fellowship is a really fantastic opportunity.”

Aisling Clark is an emerging curator currently based in Dublin. Her curatorial interests include commoning, the politics of care, and art institutions. She has curated projects as a Co-Director of the artist-run space Embassy, Edinburgh, as well as assisting with the annual shows of the Exhibiting Societies of Scottish Artists. On her appointment, Clark says “I feel extremely fortunate to be working at the Douglas Hyde as the Curatorial Fellow this year. Opportunities that pay a living wage and offer meaningful work for those starting out in the field of curating are close to non-existent. I am very grateful to the Provost and Georgina Jackson, the DHG’s Director, for establishing this fellowship which will offer myself and others a viable path to a curatorial career.  I’m very excited to be working alongside the team and to put together a project of my own in 2023.”

As our Director Georgina Jackson states “These opportunities are so crucial to foster future generations of curators and arts workers. Aisling has come to art while studying law here in Trinity and most recently completed her masters at the University of Edinburgh. We are delighted to welcome her to the team and look forward to working with her to realise an event in late 2023.” She continues, “It shows remarkable vision to support this kind of Fellowship, and I’d like to thank the former Provost and Board Chair Patrick Prendergast for initiating this Fellowship and Provost Linda Doyle for her crucial commitment to the programme and ongoing recognition of the important role of The Douglas Hyde and the visual arts across Trinity.”

About:

Aisling Clark holds an LLB Law from Trinity College, where she was a Reid Scholar and undertook her capstone research project on the repatriation of cultural objects in museums and decolonization. As a graduate of the MSc Modern & Contemporary Art: History, Curating and Criticism at the University of Edinburgh, she was awarded the Baldwin Brown dissertation prize for her thesis on the art collective Ruangrupa and Documenta Fifteen. Most recently, she worked at the Fruitmarket, Edinburgh, to recontextualize exhibitions from the gallery’s archive.
