Professor Jane Ohlmeyer elected Fellow of the British Academy

Professor Ohlmeyer is an expert on the New British and Atlantic Histories and has published extensively on early modern Irish and British history. In addition, she regularly speaks on topics that relate more generally to the humanities, on the value of inter- and trans-disciplinarity research, and on educational policy and digital humanities.

She recently secured a European Research Council Advanced Grant to lead a five-year project, which will recover the lived experiences of women in early modern Ireland, and also received a 2023 Royal Irish Academy Gold Medal in the Humanities, which marked the outstanding – and internationally recognised – contribution she has made to her field.

In joining a community of over 1,600 distinguished individuals who are part of the UK’s national academy for the humanities and social sciences, Professor Ohlmeyer, Erasmus Smith’s Professor of Modern History, said:

"To be recognised by one's peers in this way is very special indeed. I am deeply grateful to the British Academy. I will look forward to working with colleagues in the years ahead to consolidate existing and nurture fresh collaborations between Ireland and the UK and beyond and to advocate for the importance of the humanities and social sciences and, more generally, for frontier research."
