Professor Anne-Marie Healy wins SFI Mentorship Award

Professor Anne Marie Healy, Professor of Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Technology in the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences has won the SFI Mentorship Award for 2023.

Her mentorship has resulted in the successful graduation of 23 PhD students and the guidance of 27 postdoctoral researchers to date.

On her award, Professor Healy said:

“I am delighted and deeply honoured to receive the 2023 SFI Mentorship Award. Seeing my students and other researchers in my group go on to achieve success in academia or industry is among the most fulfilling aspects of my academic journey. It is always a pleasure to work with such talented individuals. I am thankful to my colleagues in the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, the SSPC and the CDT in Transformative Pharmaceutical Technologies for their support. I would especially like to thank my research group members, past and present, as well as the CDT students, whose thoughtful nominations for this award I sincerely appreciate.”

Through the EPSRC-SFI Centre for Doctoral Training in Transformative Pharmaceutical Technologies, which is co-funded by the Engineering and Physical Science Research Council (EPSRC) of the UK and SFI, Professor Healy has worked with colleagues in Univeristy College Cork, University College Dublin, the University of Nottingham, and University College London to develop a unique, multidisciplinary training programme for PhD students.

The programme is designed to prepare strategic-thinking scientists for high achieving careers in the pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors and will train 75 PhD students between the UK and Ireland over an eight-year period (2019-2027). As Co-Director, Professor Healy has a pivotal role in ensuring the successful delivery of a comprehensive scientific and soft-skills training curriculum, that aligns with PhD students’ needs and interests.

She guides her mentees in technical aspects of their research and in the dissemination of their work, as well as supporting them in establishing connections with the wider academic and industry sectors. Her mentees have gone on to pursue successful careers in academia and in diverse roles in the pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical industries, both in Ireland and internationally.

She is also Co-Principal Investigator of the SSPC, the SFI Research Centre for Pharmaceuticals and Co-Director of the EPSRC-SFI Centre for Doctoral Training in Transformative Pharmaceutical Technologies.

The Dean of Research Sinéad Ryan commented: ‘Warm congratulations to Anne-Marie Healy on this SFI Mentorship Award. This award recognises and celebrates Anne-Marie’s work in fostering and growing research talent at Trinity.’

Professor Healy’s award was one of a number of Science Foundation Ireland 2023 awards given yesterday evening at a ceremony in Cork.

SFI is delighted to recognise their efforts and achievements with these prestigious accolades. I want to offer my sincere congratulations to all the award recipients. I would like to congratulate Prof. Paul Ross, University College Cork, for winning 2023 SFI Researcher of the Year. Paul Ross has been an outstanding researcher in the field of food health and gut health for many years, both in previous roles and in his current position as director of the SFI Research Centre APC Microbiome Ireland.”
